I'd Sell My Soul for a Blunt Instrument ...

You're Missing Out ...

If you're not watching Haven on SyFy? You're missing out. This is one kick-ass show. The dialog is awesome, the cast is even better, and the show, over-all, is a flat-out hoot. In simplest terms, it's a horror version of Eureka. And it has SPN-level-interactive stars that are 1000% dedicated to showing and getting FanLove ... to a degree that I think Eric Balfour may actually be Misha off drugs.

A couple of quick instances of random, sly dialog wonderfulness?

While investigating a case where a man's limbs suddenly and inexplicably began bending contrary to the laws of anatomy (accompanied by wonderfully gross FX crunchy sounds), Audrey, who has really started to grok the whole "troubles" thing of a town where nothing that happens has a rational explanation behind it, discusses potential explanations with Nathan, her partner and a Haven local who's lived with "the troubles" his whole life ...

Audrey: One minute.
Nathan: One minute what?
Audrey: One minute to get all the normal explanations out of the way. Sudden-onset acute osteoporosis? I don't think so.

And another exchange, after the coroner, who is a freaking AWESOME female version of Bobby Singer, and who yes, is wheeling the bendy man to the hospital despite the fact that she's the coroner and he's still alive (small towns: gotta love em!) has winked at Audry to indicate yes, indeed, this is another one of those crazy Haven cases ...

Audry: And besides, she winked at me.
Nathan: She winked at you?
Audry: There was winkage.

And just to backstep to the moment I first thought, hey, we've got a live one here, from the pilot, when Audry and Nathan first met, after they'd each spotted a gun on the other and thus had both pulled their guns and were standing there pointing them at each other in a John Wu standoff ...

Audry: Audry Parker, FBI. Who are you?
Nathan: Nathan Wuornos, Haven PD. Who are you?
Audry: Audry Parker, FBI ... are you deaf?

To put the characters in a nutshell:

Eric Balfour has finally found his proper vehicle as Duke Crocker, a charming rogue of a pirate/smuggler who was once Nathan's best friend and is now Nathan's most reviled rival. He's got exactly the right mix of nefarious and noble to make this character work, and it doesn't hurt that he's got a killer smile and is hot enough to cause a little spontaneous combustion right there on the water.

Emily Rose has completely nailed the perfect female cop as Audrey Parker. I don't think I've actually bonded to a female TV character this hard since ... EVER. Maybe Faith and/or Aeryn Sun. MAYBE. I like her so damn much that I don't even mind her being the pivot man in the lovey triangle between Duke and Nathan ... particularly not since they are now tweaking that a bit to a best friend dynamic between she and Nathan, leaving the smoochy eyes for she and Duke.

Lucas Bryant as Nathan Wuornos was the weak link for me initially just because he's got the broody hero role, and that rarely works for me. But Lucas? Makes it work. This last episode, in particular, shows how capable he is of playing a broody man as unlikeable and a real pain-in-the-ass to those who care for him. My biggest issue with broody heroes ala Angel is that they virtually always come off as if the broody is just an affectation because they're cool enough to be cool rather than the much more realistic (and interesting and complex) dynamic that their broody selves make them the kind of guy you'd probably kick to the curb in real life because he's a serious pain in the ass in ways that are NOT cool, they are BROODY. And Lucas is really hitting the sweet spot here, making Nathan's broody  both cool-appealing and stick-in-the-mud-irritating at the same time. And the unvarnished and unrelenting bud/hatred dynamic he's got going on with Duke is absolutely the DRAW of the whole series ... and something both actors look to be up to taking the distance. Without rendering Audrey irrelevant.

Nick Campbell is flat-out brilliant as Chief of Police Wuornos ... and yes, that is Nathan's dad. Perfect Stephen King character perfectly portrayed. The only downside to him is that he's not onscreen nearly enough.

The coroner, as I mentioned, is a wonderfully female turn on the Bobby Singer archetype and she's got a grip on it the same way Jim Beaver has a grip on Bobby; and there are a couple of journalist brothers who'd give the Lone Gunman a good run for their money in the supporting cast category.

So serious, y'all. If you're not tuning into the SyFy channel on Friday to catch Haven? You're missing out on the next Supernatural or X-Files or Eureka. This is that good ... and the cast and writers appear that capable of taking this one all the way to genre Nirvana.

Know where I could find it online? Because Comcast in its infinite wisdom decided a while back that basic cable subscribers don't get to have Syfy.

Aaah, damn, I think you got me hooked. Inspite of still having to watch TO MUCH SHOWS I think I give this one a try next.

What's the level of horror in this? I get frightened easily!! *hides* :)

Not scary-horror at all. Horror's all in the setup.

Of course, might want to take into consideration that almost nothing scares me ...

I really meant to watch this show. But then I forgot to set my DVR to record the first ep and after that I sort of felt like I didn't want to start if I couldn't start at the beginning. Maybe I can catch it on reruns later or something.

You won't lose a great deal by not starting at the beginning. I'd recommend going back and picking up the missed episodes when they re-air, but this is very much like SPN inthat you won't really be lost by joining it several eps in ... they've kind of constructed it that way, I think.

I'm really enjoying Haven. All of the characters. So far it's avoided hitting any embarrassment squicks and the Trio dynamic is pretty entertaining. The journalist brothers are quickly becoming a fav. You just know they know more than they've said about Audrey's possible mother, but are they holding back because Audrey is a good addition to the town and they want to keep her around, or is it something really bad?

Dun dun dun DUN!

I think they may be holding back so they don't set up an ongoing storyline that will exclude new viewers in important info, myself. :D

I'm actually liking it more than I did a large percentage of the X-Files. And I think it's getting better, myself. Looking forward to where they're going to go with it.

Do you happen to know if it's on-line anywhere? I hate just jumping into shows. Also, is it very scary? Because that won't work for me. ;) Haha.

You know, seeing that my real name is actually Haven that's excuse enough to watch, isn't it? lol

I do have to say though, you're a good wooer. I'm adding the show to the top of my list!

Okay, you sold me. I had never heard of this show, but I've always liked Eric Balfour (he's just got that...something. I don't know if "charisma" is the right word I'm looking for, but it'll do for now.) :-) I also crave awesome dialog so it sounds like a winner for me. And, I really do trust your opinion, so yeah, I'm in. Bonus is that it sounds like something my husband would be into, too.

Thanks for the recommendation! ♥

I've loved Eric since 24, and have waited and waited and waited for him to find the right show. Think this is the one. And I thought Emily Rose was good in John from Cincinnati, but I didn't fangirl her or anything ... but I kinda am now. Never seen Lucas in anything, but he's winning me over here. (And my husband loves it, too ... we do the Eureka/Haven doubleheader on Friday nights and he doesn't even bitch about missing the World Series of Poker to do it. LOL)

Exactly. I was thinking "eh, I'll give er a go, but I'm expecting nada." Why? Because people tend to suck at effectively translating Stephen King's work to TV and because, hello, SyFy channel. How in the fuck do they produce movies like Lake Placid 3 and series like Battlestar Galactica and Eureka? It boggles the mind that such extreme can co-exist on one flagship without some kind of matter/anti-matter catastrophe in the offing.

But hey, Eric Balfour, and I always try to give new genre shows at least a chance. Imagine my delight to find it rocking the casba.

(You were right about Rizzoli and Isles, by the way. In the long haul, it became a greater disaster with every week that passed. We finally gave up on it altogether. Damn shame. We like most of the people involved.)

I'm kind of hoping Haven hits its stride soon; I've adored Eric Balfour for quite some time now - since I first caught onto him in Hawaii and then backtracked the rest of his work, and since my boyfriend dug up all his pro-animal work out of the limelight - so I'll stick with it until I literally can't stand it, but I'm kind of bored.

I just don't like Audrey very much and I'm more than a little eyerolly about the Mother in the Photograph thing. But I've been told that I don't like women, so...

I would counter-rec The Gates, though, which has excellent characters, Rhona Mitra, and a few glaring flaws in writing/characterization; so I'm not sure how much room I have to criticize. XD

I'm liking it more every week, not less. And I love Audrey madly ... and I rarely have more than passing affection for female characters, particularly cop and/or soldier-oriented female characters. But I love Audrey like a big dawg and am liking Jess so far as well. And I fuckin LOVE the coroner. She's a damn hoot.

Mother in the photograph thing? Eh. It was a red flag early on and I worried it was going to go down that road in ways that were so trite as to render the rest of the show unwatchable by proxy, but I've been pleasantly surprised by how they are handling it ... both that it is not dominating the other story lines and that the way they ARE playing it is mostly working for me.

Haven't heard anything on "The Gates." You have a channel and time?

Thank you for the recommendation and character summary - I am downloading the first episode now from i-tunes. I've been hungry for a new series to fall in love with and this looks promising! Is the actor who plays Duke the same guy who played Claire's high school boyfriend in 6 Feet Under? I always liked him in that role, he was so raw and had such a strong presence on screen.
